Last month I put together a makeover as an auction item for Bogus Basin’s First Annual Bogus Bash fundraiser. The young lady who won received a generous gift card to Boise Towne Square Mall, wardrobe styling and shopping assistance from me, hair and makeup services from Graeber & Company Salon, and the opportunity to reveal her new look LIVE on KTVB Channel 7’s midday news. Since most of the attendees of the Bogus Bash were sport & outdoors enthusiasts, I was curious to meet my winner and find out what kind of makeover she had in mind!
Chrystal is a young woman with a petite stature, and big dreams! Her current job takes her into the forest for months at a time, managing fish and game. She loves the outdoors, enjoys snow sports, and is proud to be a very active tomboy! But big changes are in her future. When we met, she told me that she was applying for graduate school, and wants to someday pursue a career in politics! “Can you teach me how to dress professionally?” she asked. I assured her I absolutely could. But then, Chrystal had a very specific challenge: her size!
Chrystal is under 5 ft. tall. With her current job, she simply buys jeans, t-shirts, sweaters & jackets from the children’s department at Old Navy. But where could she find children’s-sized professional wear??
I took her to Banana Republic where she was thrilled to discover that they have a petites department! We found her the Professional Wardrobe staples she needed: fitted black blazer, black pants, blouses, and an amazing dress, as well as some great wardrobe pieces like dark wash skinny jeans, an animal print sweater and patterned tops. (WATCH the KTVB Makeover Video Clip & my professional styling tips HERE!)
Fashion Tip: Can’t find the perfect length pants? Many stores, like Banana Republic and Nordstrom Rack, offer alterations! Before you give up, or take home pants that are too long for you, ASK your sales associate if they offer alterations! A $10 fix, to make your almost-perfect-pants totally perfect, is money well spent!
Next, I took Chrystal to Graeber & Company Salon & Day Spa in Downtown Boise, an Aveda Salon. Aveda’s philosophy of earth-friendly, organic, natural, pampering services & products was a perfect fit for her! My friend Derek Fisher worked on transforming her “just throw it in a ponytail” tresses, into a bouncy, energetic layered bob that matches her spunk and personality. He showed her how to apply colorful-yet-minimal makeup to bring out her natural beauty, while looking polished and professional. (WATCH the video, for Derek’s hair and makeup techniques!!!)
At the end of the day, Chrystal had a stunning new look, and I can honestly say, was beaming from head to toe! I took her to my friend Amy Somers-Burden’s photography studio in Meridian, Milestones Portraits, for one final surprise: a portrait photo session, to commemorate the day Chrystal transformed from a casual, outdoorsy, fish & game worker, to our nation’s future Ms. President. I’d vote for her – wouldn’t you?
Special thanks to KTVB, for filming Chrystal’s makeover; Banana Republic, for their assistance and impeccable service; Graeber & Company Salon & Day Spa (especially Derek the Great!), for donating services and products & pampering our makeover candidate; Amy at Milestones Portraits for the gorgeous photos; and to the beautiful Chrystal, for bravely asking for this transformation, daring to try new things, letting us film it, and coming on LIVE news with me to share your story with everyone! I’m excited to watch your career flourish, and hope I get the opportunity to vote you into office someday!!!
