Pop Culture is having a moment. Will Ferrell’s new movie Anchorman 2, about ridiculous-yet-loveable newscaster Ron Burgundy, launched this week, and it’s funny! Goofy, yes, but funny. Locally, Boise newscaster Paul Gerke impersonated Burgundy for Halloween, and launched a YouTube sensation that is taking him to the Katie Couric show this coming Monday, Dec. 23rd! And the new Miss Courageous store opened on Orchard St., carrying everything from Ron Burgundy “Stay Classy, Boise!” t-shirts, to all the kitschy-cool stuff you never knew you wanted, but somehow still dreamed about!
Local artisan Millie Hilgert is brilliant. She started crafting years ago, re-purposing Legos into everyday fun things like tie-tacs, earrings, and notebook covers you can build on. Now, “geek chic” is a full-blown style of its own, with fanboys & girls gathering at massive cons, wearing their movie, gamer, & comic book love on their chests, and having the coolest websites around, where you can find anything from Death Star ice cube molds, to hard-core programmer product reviews, and the ability to join local social media armies. Perching at the peak of this marriage between retro and sci-fi is Millie, with her new storefront for Miss Courageous, filled to the brim with nerdy awesomeness!
Step in her doors, and the 9 year old in your head starts jumping up & down with glee. This isn’t a store where you can rush in and out quickly (although if you need to, Millie will kindly and patiently help you select the perfect speedy gift!) There’s just so much to see here; it’s like Disneyland for Gen X-ers! Handmade Batman skirts, Lego Millennium Falcon key chains, superhero tote bags, belt buckles made from Altoids boxes, scrabble piece earrings… I’ll take one of everything, please!
Miss Courageous is one of those rare treasures in a gift shop; you can take your kids and even grandparents in with you, and everyone will find something they love! Stop by and geek out! I promise the 9 year old inside you will be grateful.
Happy Holidays! And stay classy, Boise.
Note: I write about local stores I love, just because I love them! I was not paid – or even asked! – for this review.
